Why Audi’s China Brand Split Is Suddenly Everywhere
Audi formalized the FAW–SAIC split on October 26 after months of reports.
Why it’s suddenly everywhere
- 01
On October 26, Audi China said it had signed separate strategic agreements with FAW and SAIC. FAW takes the four-ring brand across combustion and new-energy vehicles; SAIC focuses on the capital-letter AUDI brand and new-energy vehicles.
- 02
This is not an overnight cutoff. CnEVPost reports that SAIC Audi can sell four-ring products through the end of 2027, with after-sales continuing for both brands. The channel design after that transition has not been detailed.
- 03
The current story had a paper trail before it became a headline. Mingjing Pro reported a possible realignment in May, and Caijing described a largely settled plan in September. Back then, formal contracts and an implementation date were still missing.
- 04
Audi’s own 2024 launch document explains why a second badge was available at all: the China-only AUDI sister brand was designed around local digital expectations, with Audi and SAIC claiming their collaboration would cut development time-to-market by more than 30%.
The timeline
- 2016-11–12The second-partner dispute erupts
After the SAIC–Audi plan becomes public, FAW-Audi dealers fear the effects on their network and profits. A threat to stop taking cars leads Audi to pause sales- and network-related talks with SAIC.
- 2017-05-19The one-network compromise
Audi, FAW and dealer representatives agree that one future sales company will handle FAW-Audi, imported Audi and SAIC-Audi products, rather than giving SAIC Audi an entirely separate network.
- 2021–2022SAIC Audi meets the market
The brand debuts in April 2021 and the A7L follows. Yet 21st Century Business Herald reports only 4,817 retail sales for SAIC Audi in January–October 2022, showing how hard differentiation remains under one badge.
- 2024-11-07A sister brand drops the rings
Audi unveils AUDI in four capital letters, explicitly without the four-ring logo. The China-exclusive brand combines Audi engineering and design with SAIC’s local technology ecosystem on the Advanced Digitized Platform.
- 2025-09–2026-05The lettermark gains a lineup
The E5 Sportback goes on sale in September 2025, followed by the E7X SUV in May 2026. A third model from the initial rollout is due in 2027.
- 2026-05–09The split leaks before it is signed
May and September reports describe a four-ring business consolidated at FAW and a SAIC business centered on AUDI. In September, Caijing says contracts and detailed handover arrangements are still unfinished.
- 2026-09-03Shanghai R&D makes the plan operational
The AUDI Innovation & Technology Center opens in Shanghai with a team of about 300. It is dedicated to AUDI and a coming family of ADP 2.0 models, the first of which is scheduled for 2028.
- 2026-10-26Signatures turn reports into a map
Audi formalizes the dual-brand, dual-partner structure. FAW gets four-ring combustion and electric models; SAIC gets AUDI and a transition to sell its existing four-ring range through 2027.
The backstory
The original fight was over dealers, not badges
The phrase “north–south Audi split” makes this sound like a corporate divorce cooked up in 2026. Its roots are much older, and the original argument was not about electric vehicles. When Audi’s plan to work with SAIC became public in 2016, FAW-Audi’s established dealers saw a second product source and the possibility of another sales network entering a business whose profits were already under pressure. Contemporary reporting by China Youth Daily described a threatened December 1 halt to vehicle collection. Audi responded by pausing the sales- and network-related talks with SAIC.
The compromise announced on May 19, 2017 is the key to everything that followed. Caixin reported that Audi, FAW and dealer representatives had agreed to one future sales company for FAW-Audi, imported Audi and SAIC-Audi vehicles. SAIC would not simply build an independent parallel Audi channel. This did not freeze every later retail experiment, but it made channel governance, rather than factory capacity alone, the central problem of the second partnership.
SAIC Audi finally debuted in 2021. It tried to differentiate through higher-positioned models and a new retail approach, but the numbers showed the difficulty. According to 21st Century Business Herald, SAIC Audi recorded 4,817 retail sales in January–October 2022. That figure is not a verdict on any particular model. It reveals the structural puzzle: executives wanted a second Audi operation that would not merely copy the first, while customers still saw the same four rings and the same brand name.
A comment from that period now reads like an early draft of the eventual solution. A SAIC Audi executive told the outlet that the company did not want to create “two Audi brands,” but one Audi expressed through different products and marketing. Two years later, Audi created a separate sister brand after all. The 2026 agreement is the organizational conclusion of that shift.
Four letters made a second identity possible
The November 2024 launch of AUDI was easy to mock as an Audi without its most recognizable asset. Officially, however, the missing rings were the point. Audi described the four capital letters as both a connection to and a differentiation from the four-ring sister brand. The target was a younger, more technology-focused Chinese audience whose expectations for connectivity and assisted driving differed from those of Audi’s traditional global customer base.
The division of labor was equally specific. Audi would contribute premium-product design, vehicle development and engineering; SAIC would contribute local-market knowledge, a technology ecosystem and speed. Their jointly developed Advanced Digitized Platform would underpin China-only electric models. Audi claimed the collaboration would reduce time-to-market by more than 30%, an assertion about development method rather than a sales forecast.
For a while, this produced the unusual sight of two badges inside SAIC Audi: conventional four-ring vehicles such as the A7L and Q6 sat beside the new lettermark line. Then the lettermark acquired enough substance to stand on its own. The E5 Sportback arrived in September 2025 and the E7X followed in May 2026. By April, Audi was already describing a third initial model for 2027 and four additional AUDI models with SAIC. September’s dedicated Shanghai R&D center supplied another piece of the picture.
That sequence matters. If the 2026 agreements had arrived before the new brand had products and a development organization, assigning SAIC “AUDI only” would have looked like removing its future. After the E5, E7X and the new center, it became a reallocation of two functioning product systems.
This is a brand split, not an engine split
The most common shorthand—FAW keeps petrol cars, SAIC gets electric ones—is wrong. FAW’s four-ring mandate includes both combustion and new-energy vehicles. Its lineup includes the A6L e-tron and Q6L e-tron, built on the PPE electric platform, alongside combustion models. SAIC’s side is organized around AUDI, whose identity is electric, connected and China-specific. The boundary is therefore the badge and product system, not whether a car has an exhaust pipe.
Why redraw that boundary now? One reason is overlap. In a September analysis, Auto Commune pointed to FAW’s A5L and SAIC’s A5L Sportback as neighboring products backed by separate teams and retail operations. That interpretation goes beyond Audi’s official language, but it explains why “two partners” could create internal competition instead of extra reach. Audi’s own announcement used the cooler vocabulary of clearer positioning, faster decisions and quicker market response.
The financial background adds urgency. Red Star Capital’s report on Audi’s half-year figures put China deliveries, including Hong Kong, at 232,200 in the first half of 2026, down 19.2% year on year. Profit contribution from the Chinese business fell from €279 million to €73 million over the same comparison. Those numbers do not prove that reallocating badges will restore growth. They do show why maintaining overlapping structures became harder to defend.
For owners, the immediate arrangement is much less dramatic than the word “split” suggests. SAIC Audi can continue selling four-ring models through the end of 2027, and Audi says after-sales for both four-ring and AUDI products will operate smoothly during the transition. What happens to every sales channel afterward remains unanswered. The company has clarified brand ownership before publishing the complete retail endgame.
That service promise belongs in the story. China’s EV discussion has moved beyond launch events, with China’s first EV warranty cliff raising questions about repair, resale and responsibility as early vehicles leave coverage. Audi’s transition adds a corporate version of the same issue: when badges and sales rights move, the existing customer relationship still has to remain intact.
A decade ago, Audi tried to accommodate a second Chinese partner while preserving the idea of one Audi brand and one sales framework. The 2026 map takes the opposite approach. The partners stay; the identities separate. Four rings versus four letters is therefore not badge trivia. It is the mechanism by which a decade-old partnership dispute became a two-brand organization.

What people are saying
Presented capital-letter AUDI as a route to more tech-savvy Chinese customers, combining Audi design and engineering with SAIC’s local ecosystem. The launch claimed the cooperation would shorten time-to-market by more than 30%.
Reported that SAIC Audi’s early leadership did not want a simple second volume-driven Audi, and still described the goal as one Audi brand with different products and marketing. That makes the later sister-brand structure a notable change of answer.
Framed the 2026 agreement as a division by brand rather than a simple combustion-versus-electric split, and noted that Audi had not yet explained how sales channels will be handled after the transition.
Common questions
Are Audi and SAIC ending their partnership?
No. Audi says the dual-brand, dual-partner structure remains. The new agreements divide responsibilities: FAW concentrates on four-ring Audi, while SAIC concentrates on the China-only AUDI sister brand.
Does FAW get only combustion cars and SAIC only EVs?
No. FAW’s four-ring portfolio explicitly covers both combustion and new-energy vehicles, including PPE-based electric models. SAIC’s AUDI mandate is centered on new-energy vehicles. The clean dividing line is brand, not powertrain.
What happens to SAIC Audi’s existing four-ring cars and owners?
SAIC Audi can sell four-ring products through the end of 2027. Audi says after-sales for those vehicles and for AUDI models will continue smoothly. It has not yet published the complete post-transition channel arrangement.
Is capital-letter AUDI actually an Audi brand?
It is a China-exclusive sister brand jointly developed by Audi and SAIC, not an unrelated marque using a similar name. Audi contributes design and engineering while SAIC contributes local technology and market knowledge. Dropping the four rings was a deliberate act of differentiation.
