Grand Theft Auto VI Explained: From Origins to Now
A Game Informer cover story lands today, 51 days before launch.
Why it’s suddenly everywhere
- 01
Game Informer issue 382 goes digital today, September 29: a 14-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover story with 12 exclusive new screenshots and interviews with Rockstar lead designers — the game’s deepest official look since Trailer 2.
- 02
The cover itself is new original Rockstar artwork of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in a bullet-riddled red car — revealed September 25 and dissected frame by frame across Reddit and X ever since.
- 03
It lands inside a deliberate marketing drumbeat: last week Rockstar announced GTA VI: The Album, a 34-track soundtrack with Travis Scott, Yung Lean and CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso, coming on vinyl and CD.
- 04
The launch is 51 days away — November 19, 2026, after two public delays — and Take-Two has guided investors to roughly $8 billion in annual net bookings, a number that assumes this game ships on time.
The timeline

- 2025-05-02Delay one
Rockstar pushes the game from 2025 to May 26, 2026 — then drops Trailer 2 four days later, to euphoric reviews and record views of its own.
- 2025-11Delay two
The date moves again, from May 2026 to November 19, 2026. Take-Two’s CEO will spend the next year repeating that date like a mantra.

Grand Theft Auto VI arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S — thirteen years and two months after GTA V.
The backstory
Thirteen years in the making
Grand Theft Auto VI exists inside a paradox of its predecessor’s success. GTA V shipped in September 2013 and simply never stopped selling — across three console generations, past 210 million copies, with an online mode that became a business of its own. Rockstar had little commercial reason to hurry a sequel, and it didn’t: pre-production reportedly began around 2014, but the studio said nothing official for eight years while the community built an entire mythology out of leaks, mapping projects and codename sleuthing around “Project Americas.”
When the outside world did force its way in, it did so violently. In September 2022, a hacker posted more than 90 clips of unfinished development footage — an event journalists called one of the biggest leaks in industry history. Rockstar confirmed the breach, expressed disappointment, and said development would continue as planned. The strange side effect was legitimizing: after years of rumors, everyone had now seen the game, and it was real, and it was Vice City.
The official campaign began in December 2023 with Trailer 1 — leaked online hours early, then posted officially, then watched 93 million times in its first 24 hours, a YouTube record for a non-music video. From there the story became one of patience: a promised 2025 slipped to May 26, 2026, announced with an apology and followed four days later by a Trailer 2 so polished it briefly made the delay forgivable. Then, in November 2025, the date moved once more, to November 19, 2026. Two public delays is actually a short list by Rockstar standards — nearly every GTA and Red Dead title has missed its first announced date — but each slip landed on a fanbase that had already waited a decade.
Why a magazine cover is the big moment
The most telling detail of the launch campaign is where Rockstar chose to spend it: not a stream, not a showcase, but the cover of a print gaming magazine. This is tradition. Game Informer carried the world-exclusive GTA V reveal in its December 2012 issue — 18 pages, the magazine’s biggest story of that year — and Niko Bellic was on the cover in 2007. Rockstar doesn’t do many interviews, and when it does, it has historically done them on paper, with this magazine.
The 2026 version of that ritual nearly didn’t exist. GameStop shut Game Informer down in August 2024 after 33 years and 368 issues, laying off the entire staff and wiping the website. Seven months later, German studio Gunzilla Games bought the brand, rehired the editorial team wholesale, and relaunched it as an independent publication. Issue 382 — the GTA VI cover — is therefore a double resurrection: the biggest game in the world blessing a magazine that was dead two years ago, on the very medium, print, that the industry keeps declaring finished. The symmetry was not lost on readers, who treated the cover reveal on September 25 like a collector’s event before a single page had been read.
The content inside matches the moment. Senior associate editor Marcus Stewart — a South Florida native — interviewed Rockstar lead designers about how they built Leonida, the game’s Florida parody state: weather systems that simulate the region’s sudden storms rather than postcard sunshine, and a wildlife population spanning land, air and sea. Twelve exclusive screenshots accompany the piece. For a studio that communicates almost entirely through trailers, this is a year’s worth of information arriving in one day.
The album before the game
The cover story didn’t arrive in isolation. A week earlier, Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album — 34 original tracks, with six already out, spanning Travis Scott (produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk), Yung Lean with Future and Metro Boomin, and Argentine duo CA7RIEL & Paco Amoroso. Special-edition vinyl pressings carry yet more new Jason-and-Lucia artwork, which is how a soundtrack announcement doubled as a visual reveal.
The sequence is the point. Album announcement, then magazine cover, then — in the gaps — a slow drip of official wallpapers on Rockstar’s site. With Trailer 3 still unannounced and the price still unspoken, Rockstar is running a launch campaign in which the community does most of the amplification: every asset, however small, becomes a day of frame-by-frame analysis across Reddit, X and YouTube. Fifty-one days out, the biggest entertainment launch in years is being marketed one artifact at a time — and each one is trending. The same autumn has turned literary heritage into a parallel genre of event: two days after the cover story went digital, a Steinbeck novel from 1952 topped the trending charts as a seven-part Netflix series.

What people are saying
Framed the 14-page story as a homegrown deep dive: a South Florida native interviewing Rockstar about simulated storms, wildlife on land, air and sea, and making Leonida the most lifelike world the studio has built.
Repeated the launch date like a mantra to calm delay rumors — "we’ve been really clear that we’re releasing the title on November 19" — and confirmed Rockstar’s marketing push begins in summer, never on an earnings call.
Noted the campaign’s cadence: soundtrack vinyl one week, a magazine cover the next — a strategic drip that keeps fans "fed ahead of launch" without ever showing a new trailer.
Common questions
Is GTA VI really coming November 19, or will it slip to 2027?
Nothing official suggests another delay. Take-Two reiterated the date on its May 2026 earnings call and built its $8 billion FY2027 guidance around it — guidance it would legally have to revise if the date moved. That said, the game has already slipped twice, and Rockstar’s history argues for humility about any date.
Why does a print magazine cover matter in 2026?
Because it’s Rockstar’s ritual: GTA V’s world-exclusive reveal was Game Informer’s December 2012 issue, and the studio rarely grants deep interviews anywhere else. There’s also a comeback inside the comeback — GameStop killed the magazine in 2024, and it returned under Gunzilla Games with its original staff just in time for the biggest cover in its history.
What did we actually learn from the cover story?
The headline reveals are systemic, not story-based: Leonida’s weather simulates Florida’s real volatility (sudden storms, hurricane-grade events), and the state has a dense wildlife ecosystem across land, air and sea. Twelve new screenshots accompany the piece — the largest official image drop since Trailer 2.
Is there a PC version?
Not at launch. Rockstar has dated PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for November 19, 2026 only. The studio’s pattern with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 suggests a PC version follows later, but no PC date has been announced.
